Creating accessible experiences is an essential part of our brand.

One of our design principles is accessibility through design. By creating inclusive design we enable content to be accessible to all users, but what does this mean in practice?

Key principles of accessibility

Digital design should adhere to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), with a minimal level of A. The key principles to bear in mind are:

  1. Make content easy to navigate and understand
  2. Use clear and easy to comprehend language
  3. Provide text based alternatives for non-text content such as descriptions of data represented on charts, diagrams, and illustrations
  4. Provide alternatives for multimedia such as text transcripts for video
  5. Ensure that video or audio content can be easily paused, played back or the volume adjusted
  6. Use high contrast colours and avoid using small font sizes
  7. Ensure content doesn't cause seizures by avoiding special patterns or flashes and always provide mechanisms for switching animations off
